Maybe you’re newly affirming, maybe you’ve been inclusive for a while, maybe you’re just starting the journey, but someone in your faith community has said “We should be at Pride this year!” Showing up at Pride isn’t just about being seen — it’s about showing your community what faithful affirmation really looks like. Whether you’re just beginning or long on the journey, this is your chance to show love louder.
What does it look like for a church, ministry, or other faith organization to “be at Pride”?
* Some ministries join with another group, like Free Mom Hugs, their denomination’s local group, or a collection of affirming faith organizations.
* Others host their own booth at the local Pride festival.
* And some faith spaces coordinate their own Pride events, from a Pride worship to a panel on LGBTQ+ faith to a summit with keynote speakers.
When planning a Pride presence, each ministry should think about:
WHY you want to be there: What does your ministry have to offer the LGBTQ+ community?
WHO is on your team: Who from your ministry wants to help “be at Pride” — and will anyone in your community object?
HOW people at Pride may feel about religion: Do religious protestors show up at your local Pride each year? What can you do to be visibly and undeniably affirming?
And:
WHO your partners are: What other ministries have a presence at your local Pride?
WHAT your capacity is: What skills and gifts can be committed to “doing something” for Pride? Are there enough available volunteers to staff a booth for a weekend, are there funds ready to pay speakers for an event?
IS your ministry clearly affirming: How is your ministry inclusive of LGBTQ+ people?
